Soak ALL the fruit

Here we go again.

  1. I have not made one in years. Probably not since the year I made a dozen proper ones from scratch, including whipping pounds of butter by hand, and gave them out as gifts. My fellow colonials were too ignorant to appreciate the difference between the bricks sold in the grocery, and the ones I made with pounds of real butter, dried fruit, and more than a litre of brandy.

    1. It's the brandy that's causing the tension. Most of the friends who'll actually eat it will be driving, which means I really have to rein in my urges to soak it in enough booze to drown a small mammal. I'm seriously thinking of making a smaller alcohol free version just so I can indulge.

  2. I made this last year and it worked out really well, but fuck whipping butter by hand, I used a whipper. I made some custard too to put on top, but then all the Japanese people I gave it to said the custard doesn't work well with it which really hurt my feelings and shattered my fragile childhood Christmas memories of fruit cake, custard and ice-cream.

I don't know if I'll make it again this year or not. Reckon you could post me a bit in the mail?

How long do you soak the sultanas etc. in brandy for?

    1. I was a poor university student who didn't own a mixer. And fuck the Japanese people who questioned how you made it: the flavours match in your culture, and that should have been good enough for them. I won't eat at a restaurant with my J-m-in-law for the whinging she does.

    2. Ant is of course entirely correct regarding the best method to deal with ingrates, but in all honesty I've got to say that custard with fruit cake does sound a bit weird.

The fruit just got done overnight, but the cake'll get fed once a week from here on in. Yum yum yum.

    1. This is one of many reasons I'm not friends with students or colleagues on facebook. There's nothing too incriminating, but I once didn't get a proper haircut for about a year and a half. It wasn't a good look.

  4. Getting a fruitcake at Christmastime as a kid always made me feel like I was hated...
