Things We Lost in the Fire / Things We Found During the Autopsy

Mariana Enriquez, 2016 [Megan McDowell, 2017]
(February 2018)

I must confess I read these books simply for the story implied by the juxtaposition of their titles. This was unfair, as both short story collections are, in their own very different ways, very good indeed. The Enriquez is a slice of Argentinian weird noir, with an off-kilter, vaguely supernatural vibe that reads like Shirley Jackson’s edgier younger sister, while I literally cried laughing at the Manickavel. Things We Found During the Autopsy is a breathtaking collection of short, powerful, and often violently funny stories. Driven, urgent stories, though I was often unsure as to whether they were driven by satire or just sheer rage.

The Gentoo penguins will be confused and angry that you have accused them of slavery and invading the Caribbean … thus signalling the beginning of great violence.

iCake

You can imagine me reading this post whilst wearing a black polo neck if you like, or making some more topical references about an executive's sexual orientation, or hoping fanboys get all excited about how it's essentially the same thing as the last one I made but there's half a teaspoon more cinnamon this time. Look, it's an apple cake and I'm a busy man and you need to start pulling your weight around here with the gags and stuff. I can't do it all for you, y'know?

Asterix and the Picts

(February 2014)

I adored Asterix when I was a kid, so reading this involved getting smashed in the face by nostalgia with the forced of a carelessly tossed menhir (or indeed caber). I am thus utterly incapable of offering anything even remotely resembling an impartial or considered view on the matter.

Atlas of Remote Islands

(February 2014)

My decision to join twitter seems to have reaped some unexpectedly rapid and literal dividends. A short tweet dashed off in haste, largely because I’m one of those tedious people who takes far too much pleasure in cheap wordplay, and I now find myself the recipient of three hundred quid’s worth of books courtesy of Waterstones (That’s WATERSTONES, may as well make sure they get their money’s worth).

Semiotics

Semiotics: A Graphic Guide
Paul Cobley and Litza Jansz, 1997
Semiotics: The Basics
Daniel Chandler, 2007
(November 2013)

Well, this all strikes me as being terribly significant.

All The Thyme in The World

Seriously. It's growing like a fucking weed and we can't use it up fast enough.

Anyway. As promised, here's your picture of a cake. I even got all artsy with the residuals.
